Purpose:
This course is designed with an emphasis on surgical errors that have been identified as frequent and preventable events by the Joint Commission, National Patient Safety Foundation, and Institute for Healthcare Improvement. Physician engagement and participation in hospital patient safety initiatives is critical to improving outcomes for patients. Physician collaboration with hospitals is crucial in preventing wrong site surgeries, retained foreign objects, medication errors, and surgical site infections.

- Describe methods for preventing wrong site surgery, retained foreign objects, and infections.
