Purpose:
This informative seminar is designed with an emphasis on national initiatives that affect the day-to-day physician practice. These include programs for patient safety, legislation governing the physician practice, and our legal system controlling medical malpractice claims.
Physician engagement and participation in patient safety initiatives is critical to improving outcomes for patients. Their collaboration with hospitals to prevent wrong site surgeries, retained foreign objects, and surgical site infections is crucial for success.
Compliance with key privacy and security regulations for protected health information is an integral part of any physician practice. This includes compliance with the Red Flag Rules governing identity theft and all patient rights.
Finally, physicians should familiarize themselves with the legal process of our medical malpractice system. An understanding of these various components will assist physicians in shaping day-to-day practices to meet national standards.
Objectives:
- Describe methods for preventing wrong site surgery, retained foreign objects, and infections.
- Identify three key privacy and security changes resulting from ARRA for your practice.
- Recall the physician’s role in the pretrial process of a medical malpractice claim.
