Patient Safety Impact Story: Mislabeled Diagnostic Specimens Put Lab Team at Risk

We recently shared an example of how our Patient Safety and Risk Management experts partnered with a member practice to mitigate risk. A clinical laboratory noticed an increase in tissue specimens arriving mislabeled, prompting a Practice Risk INSIGHT review by our patient safety risk manager. As a result, the lab accelerated efforts to implement a strict new labeling workflow module and require its clients to adopt the new process. Ultimately, the results showed a dramatic reduction in lost specimens—from 63 to zero.
